Reality Check: Faith vs. Presumption

Faith is… believing in God and His promises

For he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.  Heb 11:6

Presumption is… believing more or less than what God has promised… something other than what God said.

When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.  Deu 18:22

Faith…  is a way of life (Rom 1:17), works by love (Gal 5:6), develops patience (Jam 1:3), and is pleasing to God (Heb 11:6)

Presumption… is a reproach to the Lord (Num 15:30), a form of rebellion (Deu 1:43), and results in judgement from God (Due 18:20)

To walk by faith… is to walk with God

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love (Eph 3:17)

To walk presumptuously… is to walk on your own

And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper. Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies. For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you. But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.  (Num 14:41-45)
